"Holding On is a print of a rock fig (Ficus abutilifolia) in a kloof of the Motlatse (Blyde) River Canyon. This miraculous, heavy tree with twisting branches has pushed into a niche that no other trees dare touch, growing out of a narrow crack in the rock and holding onto the cliff face with the sinuous ropes of its roots. Through drought, flood and the torment of accelerating climate change, it holds on. This kloof also shelters another miracle - several rock art sites that echo the voices of people who walked the mountains many generations ago. Like fig roots, handprints and paintings of animals in red ochre still flicker in dappled light on the stone walls of the kloof. This print is about fragile, beautiful things holding on despite the battering of the elements and the passing of time." Simon Attwood, 2026
