Karin Daymond worked on these prints over various session in the studio from 2010 and completed them in 2026. As monotypes and monoprints, they are in essence paintings on paper and exist as single prints (they are not part of an edition).
"Making monoprints tends to tap into exactly where my head and heart are at that moment. Perhaps it’s because it is such an immediate form of printmaking; the results happen quickly and there is such a big range of possibility in terms of colour and tone.
So when Mark gently suggested that I return to the press to tackle my drawer of unfinished or unresolved images which have accumulated since I first printed with The Artists’ Press in 2010, I thought going back to previous images would be onerous. But instead, it was fun to use some of the insight I have gained in the interim.
And the process didn’t disappoint. Monoprinting is a rollercoaster of holding on and letting go, and I was able to bring many of the fleeting images into the present moment. The dry mealie field got a flat layer of turquoise over the whole image, except for a glimmer of warm light on the horizon, instantly changing the environment from hot and dry to cool and rainy. A ghost image of female figures from a series about refugees was drenched in vertical bands of the same colour, as if they are walking through rain. I had energy for a few completely new images too, reflecting the tumultuous weather (and other things) that the world is currently experiencing.
These environments are real places, but they also reflect my inner landscape: my sense of belonging is a recurrent theme". Karin Daymond.
