Sara Cao started her art career with the Kuru Art project in 2005. She was born in the late 1930s, and prior to joining the project had never worked with Western art materials. Even so, she had the courage to test her skills together with other people much younger than herself.

Sara Cao counts herself as one of the first in her generation who has been employed and earned a living on the freehold farms in the Ghanzi District of Botswana. Her parents lived as hunter-gatherers. She recalls wearing traditional skin clothing as a child. Cao has seen many things change during her life and she now enjoys the way the women artists gather in the studio to talk and at the same time let their creativity run wild with bright colours.

Sara Cao loves to depict the things that matter to her, such as her San heritage and the world where she now lives. She is delighted that the trees and plants she knows so well give added meaning to her life in a new way through her art. She likes to depict the wild plants that are used for food and medicinal uses. Cao often includes wild animals and birds as well as traditional figures in her art. She comments that her art gives her strength and new confidence.
